What to Do When Permeate Pump is Not Clicking

When operating properly, the Permeate Pump will click once every 2-4 seconds. When the pump clicks, it is forcing the pure water into the tank and forcing the brine water into the drain. If your system is no longer filling the tank, or you no longer hear the pump clicking, you may have clogged filters or a defective permeate pump.

The instructions will guide you in determining if the pump is defective.  Please use the the diagram for reference.

  • Turn off the feed water line to the RO unit, by shutting off the needle valve or main water line.
  • Close off the tank by turning the blue cap on the tank ball valve 90 degrees.
  • Open the pure water drinking faucet to release air pressure inside the unit.
  • Disconnect the Clear Perm In and Black Brine In line on the pump.
  • Grab a small bucket or container to catch water that will be coming out from both lines.
  • Turn back on the feed water to the unit.
  • The Black Brine In line should have a steady flow of water.
  • The Clear Perm In line should have a steady trickle of water, or even a thin stream of water. The Black Brine In line should be 2-3 times the flow rate of the Clear Line. If you have the proper flow rate from both Brine In and Perm In, reconnect both lines to the Perm Pump. Re-open the feed water line and tank ball valve. Open the Pure water faucet and let water run for about 20 seconds. If the Permeate Pump does not click, the Pump is defective and needs to be replaced.
  • If you do not have the proper flow rate for either the Brine In and Perm In line, or both lines, the Pre Filters or Membrane on the RO unit maybe depleted and needs to be replaced. Please contact an APEC representative for further support.
