If I already have a whole house water filter system, do I still need a reverse Osmosis drinking water system?

Yes, if you would like to completely purify water for drinking. Whole House Water Filter Systems are designed to reduce specific contaminants like chlorine, sediment, iron, and water hardness, etc, but these units are not effective in removing many harmful water contaminants. Reverse Osmosis systems consist of multiple stages and filters so they effectively remove more harmful contaminants and impurities found in tap water than all whole house filter systems (Ex. heavy metals, fluoride, VOCs, arsenic, radioactivity, etc). If you want to have the purest, safest drinking water possible, we recommend installing our Reverse Osmosis system.

Is it appropriate to dispense reverse osmosis output water using metal tubes? Why?

It is not recommended to dispense reverse osmosis output water using metal tubes. Because water is known as the universal solvent, metal may leach into the water causing a metallic taste. We recommend using food grade polypropylene tubing to be used as a standard with RO units.

Sometimes I see some gases or tiny bubbles inside the water cup, dispensed from your RO system, yet they seem to disappear in a few minutes. What is that and shall I be concerned?

It is quite normal to see air bubbles in a cup of pure water. This mainly occurs that air can be trapped within the RO system when the unit is first installed or filters are being replaced. As water is turned on and flows through the unit, the air pockets move throughout the system. This can have an effect on the appearance of air bubbles in the water. Ro units are very effective in removing contaminants and impurities, but cannot remove gases from water. The air bubbles you see can be from gases. Gases are not harmful in anyway and should not be of any concern.

Ro units will self purge the air bubbles that can accumulate inside the unit. As you continue to draw water, trapped air will be removed by the water flow and you should quickly see a reduction in bubbles inside the water cup. You can also drain 1-2 tanks of water to quickly purge the air bubbles.

How did you calculate that you can have savings of over $800 for owning a reverse osmosis system? And How did you end up to 2 cents per gallon for reverse osmosis water?

To calculate the savings, bottled or delivered water is about $0.79/Gal. RO water is about $0.02/gal. You saved $0.77/Gal. If you use 3 gallons of purified water per day or 1,095 total gallons per year, you save $843 per year.

To calculate RO water cost, it costs about $55 dollar per year to replace all the filters on the RO system. The average usage is about 2,400 gallons per year. 2,400 gallons divided by $55 equals about $0.02 per gallon.

You said we need to change filters every year, however, we have to not used much water this year, do we still have to replace the filters in one year?

The one year recommendation on our filters is based on average replacement time. If you do not use a lot of water, it is possible for you to have longer life on the filters but we strongly recommended not to over use your filters to preserve the life time of the membrane filter and components. You can consider upgrading to a clear housing on your first stage filter so you can physically see the filter to decide when to change them.

Are there any precautions needed when handling the membrane and the 5th stage TCR filter, during our regular reverse osmosis system’s maintenance?

The reverse osmosis membrane must never be handled by your bare hands. Our hands and skin contains bacteria, dirt and oil. This can damage the membrane and cause pre mature failure. You must use pliers when handling the membrane. Use a pair of pliers to grip onto the plastic tip of membrane, do not touch the leaves or blue outer wrapping of the membrane. Do not apply any beach or cleaning solution to the membrane in anyway.

The 5th stage TCR filter can generally be handled by your bare hands. Before reconnecting the plastic fittings at both ends of the 5th stage filter, you can apply some mild bleach solution to rinse the plastic fittings, tube ends and 2 ports on the filter. Make sure the Flow -> on the filter is pointing to the pure water output line.

You must discard the first 1-2 tanks of water as both the membrane and 5th stage filter needs to be flushed out before use. The 5th stage filter can release some carbon fines at first flush. This is normal and will quickly clear up after the first flush.

What are the main differences between Futura Anti-Scale Water Conditioner and a classic water softener?

Classic water softeners removes hardness minerals by using sodium or potassium as the ion-exchange medium but after the exchange, sodium and potassium is released into your water pipes into your home which changes the chemistry of your water and this may not be healthful in the long term. Sodium can enter the pores of your skin through showering so we recommend removing these contaminants before drinking. Classic softeners also use lots of drain water for backwashing and electricity is needed. During the backwashing cycle, water containing sodium or potassium is flushed down the drain using 50-75 gallons of water per cycle.

Water hardness is a natural phenomenon in U.S. water sources and our Futura systems are designed to neutralize these minerals (mainly calcium & magnesium) instead of removing them so there are no changes in water chemistry because this unit does not use sodium or potassium. Futura is designed to reduce heavy mineral buildup from your plumbing pipes and water heaters and make water spots easier to remove without the use of electricity or drain water which classic water softener requires. This system will provide a healthier concept and conditioned water for many years to come compared to classic softeners.

I don’t have enough space under my kitchen cabinets, but I really want to install your RO system, how can I do this?

Our under sink RO systems has a dimension of 15”L x 7”W x 17”H and a standard 4 gallon water storage tank which has a dimension of 15”H x 11” D. Usually most customers slide a system to one side of the cabinet next to wall and put the tank near the system to store purified water. The tank can also be laid on its side to save some space if under sink space is limited or if garbage disposal blocks the space to fit a tank. If available, you can consider installing the entire system in your basement or storage room and run the purified water line to your kitchen RO faucet. You can even consider installing the RO unit under the sink, but having the tank in the basement or crawlspace.

We also carry a smaller size 3 gallon tank with dimension of 14”H x 9”D, we can help replace our standard 4 gallon tank to 3 gallons tank if it is needed.

How come you do not have one of those one-size-fits-all whole house systems like other people do? (water softeners/drinking water/whole house filtration all in one I mean)

Whole House Systems are designed to support a higher (gallon per minute) flow rate to remove specific contaminants (ex. Water softeners to reduce scale, carbon system removes chlorine, iron filter removes iron, etc). Reverse Osmosis systems are designed to completely purify water down to 0.0001 micron for drinking so purified water flows out slower compared to whole house systems.

Ideally, we would like to embed a Reverse Osmosis unit into a Whole House System but it is not possible because there is no current technology that combines a drinking water RO system into a high flow whole house system.

Our standards for water purification are higher than most companies and we feel that the quality of drinking water should be much more refined than water filtered through a whole house system.

What is the difference between your whole house filters and your reverse osmosis systems?

The difference between the whole house filter and reverse osmosis system is that whole house filter is a POE (Point of Entry) system installed at the main water line to treat water for the whole house. The reverse osmosis system is a POU (Point of Use) system installed under the kitchen sink to treat water for drinking and cooking purpose. Whole house filter offer very high flow rate and is design to treat water for general usage such as cleaning, bathing, and laundry applications. The micron size is usually 10-30 micron for the whole house system. Reverse osmosis system is design to give you “Bottled water quality” drinking water for 1 to 2 dedicated RO faucets. Reverse osmosis gives you 45-90 gallons a day for drinking and cooking purpose. The micron size for the RO system is .00001 micron.
